Choral Scholarships at St Jude-on-the-Hill
St Jude's is
delighted to announce that from May 2014, it will be offering four choral
scholarships to young singers between the ages of 16 and 20. St Jude's is
looking for a soprano, an alto, a tenor and a bass to fill these four
scholarship positions.
The scholarship will
involve a weekly practice at 9.30am every Sunday in preparation with the
regular choir for the 10.30am Eucharist, at which scholars will be expected to
take a lead role. There will be occasional extra after-service practices for
choral scholars, but the commitment will end by 12 noon each Sunday.
The choral
scholarships are worth £15 per service. There are up to 50 services each year.
In addition to providing the core SATB sound to our existing choir, the choral
scholars will be expected to assist with the junior choir and the
administration of the choir library and there may be some involvement in Proms
at St. Jude's.
St Jude's has a
long-standing music tradition with organ scholars who have trained at St Jude's
having gone on to organ scholarships at eminent universities and many former
choristers having become professional singers. The church now wants to support
further the development of a new generation of young choristers: improving sight
reading and ensemble singing, introducing the scholars to a wide range of
church music and providing a useful building block for those who wish to apply
for choral awards at university.
The scholarships will
run in academic years; however we want to start the scheme from May 2014. The
successful candidates would sing with us from May until July and then be
reassessed for the following academic year.
Please contact the
organist and director of music if you are interested in auditioning. nicchalmers@hotmail.com
There will be
auditions on Sunday, 27th April at 12 noon and Sunday, 4th
May at 12 noon. Candidates will be required to sing two solo songs and will be
given a simple sight-reading exercise.
